Kazakhstan swept France with a 3-0 (25-7, 25-20, 25-7) triumph at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games men’s sitting volleyball competition on Thursday at North Paris Arena.
Erik Kaskabayev led the charge for Kazakhstan with 14 points, including eight attack points, a block, and five service winners. For France, Damien Roget contributed eight points in a tough match for the hosts.
Kazakhstan opened the set with an early lead, as a result of Perdebay Namuratov’s aggressive attacks and Kaskabayev’s powerful serves. France struggled to respond, with several reception errors from Morgan Troussard and Thibaud Lefrancois contributing to their growing deficit. Kazakhstan capitalised on these mistakes, with Zhangali Suieuov adding a crucial block that extended their advantage to 23-6.
Despite a brief rally where Jean-Christophe Rambeau managed to score with a well-placed attack, Kazakhstan quickly regained control. Suieuov continued to serve effectively, forcing more errors from the French side. A final serve from Berik Izmaganbetov, combined with a reception error from Cyrille Chahboune, secured the set for Kazakhstan at 25-7.
Kazakhstan started the second set with a burst of energy, applying pressure on France through precise attacks and strong serves. Kaskabayev led the charge, supported by Yerbolat Altayev, whose aggressive serves began to disrupt France’s defence early on. France managed to keep pace initially, with Roget scoring a crucial block point, but Kazakhstan’s relentless assault soon began to wear them down.
As the set progressed, Kazakhstan capitalised on France’s errors, extending their lead. Despite a spirited effort from France, highlighted by Romain Wolniewicz’s attacks, Kazakhstan remained in control. The set reached its climax as Kaskabayev’s powerful spike, followed by Altayev’s ace, sealed Kazakhstan’s victory at 25-20.
In the third set, Kazakhstan continued their commanding performance, quickly pulling ahead of France with a combination of strong serves and aggressive attacks. Altayev’s precise serves caused significant trouble for France’s reception, allowing Kazakhstan to steadily build their lead. Despite France’s attempts to regroup with substitutions, including the introduction of Thomas Laronce, the team struggled to find any rhythm against Kazakhstan’s relentless pressure.
