COLUMBIA, Mo. – Junior outside hitter Hayden Kubik finished with a career high in kills, but it wasn’t enough as Tennessee fell in five sets (25-22, 25-27, 18-25, 25-23, 15-7) on the road at Missouri.
Kubik tallied 16 kills, 10 digs, two blocks and an assist on the day, marking her third double-double of the season. Graduate outside Nina Cajic led the team in kills with 18 to go along with nine digs, a career-best seven aces and one assist.
Freshmen Paityn Chapman and Chelsea Sutton had solid outings. Chapman finished with seven kills, three blocks, two digs and an ace, while Sutton added six kills and a team-best five blocks. Redshirt sophomore setter Caroline Kerr ended with 47 assists, six digs and three blocks. Sophomore libero Katie Barrier recorded a career-high 12 digs on the day to go along with one ace and one assist.
The Lady Vols (9-6, 2-3 SEC) finished the day with 53 kills on .236 hitting, 51 assists and 11 aces on offense, while the defense had 56 digs and eight blocks. The difference for the Tigers (12-5, 3-2 SEC) was 64 kills on .263 hitting and 71 digs. During the final two sets, Missouri had 23 kills compared to UT’s 15. Overall for the match, the two teams were tied 44 times and the contest saw 16 lead changes in the back-and-forth affair.
The opening frame was a competitive one between the two squads, but the Tigers were more efficient on offense, outhitting UT .289 to .211. Cajic (4) and Kubik (5) combined for nine of Tennessee’s 13 kills in the frame.
Just like the first set, the second stanza went back and forth, but the Lady Vols used a three-run swing at the end of the stretch to pull even with Mizzou. The Big Orange offense was on fire in the period, finishing with 17 kills while hitting .452 to go along with three aces.
In the third set, UT used runs 7-3 and 6-1 to quickly jump out to a 15-10 advantage at the media timeout. After a 5-0 run by Missouri pulled the Tigers within two points of the Lady Vols, Tennessee put the frame away by winning seven of the final nine points. The Big Orange had just eight kills in the stanza, but it was six aces by UT and seven attacking errors from MU that made the difference.
