COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 5 Ohio State Buckeyes (19-6, 15-2 B1G) fell to Maryland (15-14, 6-11 B1G) in four sets (25-16, 15-25, 18-25, 18-25) on Friday evening in College Park in the teams’ lone meeting of the season.

Ohio State took control of the first set early and capped the 25-16 set win by scoring the final five points. Maryland got its block going to even the match with a 25-15 second set. The Terrapins gained the advantage in the match with a 25-18 win in set three following a strong finish. Maryland capped the 25-18 fourth set strong with five of the final six points.

How it Happened

Gabby Gonzales opened scoring with a quick kill as Ohio State took the first three points and jumped out to an early 6-1 lead. The Buckeyes led 10-5 following back-to-back points, forcing a Maryland timeout. The Terrapins got within three out of the timeout at 11-8 and 12-9, including a successful challenge, before consecutive Buckeye points. A 4-1 OSU run extended Ohio State’s lead to 18-11 as Maryland called its second timeout of the set. The Terps got as close as four at 20-16 before the Buckeyes scored the final five points of the set to earn the 25-16 set win on a solo block from Jenaisya Moore.

Maryland scored first in the second set, but Ohio State responded immediately. The Terrapins used a 4-0 run to take a 7-4 lead and maintained the advantage at 14-10. The Buckeyes got within one with four of the next five points, trimming the deficit to 15-14. Three-consecutive Maryland points forced an OSU timeout as the Buckeyes trailed 18-14. The Terrapins scored the next three to force another Ohio State timeout at 21-14. Maryland tied the match with a 25-15 set win.

The Terps scored the first two points of the third set and took a 5-1 lead to prompt a Buckeye timeout. Ohio State went on a 4-1 run to cut the deficit to 6-5. Another successful challenge by Maryland reversed the point that would’ve tied the set at six. The teams traded points before Maryland scored back-to-back points to extend the lead to 16-11 and force a second OSU timeout. Ohio State climbed back within two at 19-17 amidst a 4-0 run and a successful challenge. Maryland scored the final four down the stretch to win the set by a 25-18 mark.
