Lady Vols Complete Senior Day Sweep Over South Carolina


KNOXVILLE Tenn. – The Tennessee Lady Vols celebrated a senior day sweep (25-20, 25-19, 25-20) over the South Carolina Gamecocks on Sunday afternoon at Food City Center.
 
Tennessee (15-10, 8-7 SEC) finished the match with 45 kills on .274 hitting, 44 assists and four aces on offense, while the Big Orange defense recorded 42 digs, nine blocks and held the Gamecocks (15-10, 6-8 SEC) to only 36 kills on .163 hitting. The sweep marked the second in the row for the Lady Vols and was the seventh of the season.
 
Graduate student outside hitter Nina Cajic led the way on offense with 16 kills and two aces, while also adding two digs and one block. Sophomore setter Caroline Kerr enjoyed a well-rounded performance with 37 assists to go along with 12 digs, four blocks, two kills and an ace for her seventh double-double this season. 
 
Junior middle blocker Keondreya Granberry, freshman right side Paityn Chapman and junior outside hitter Hayden Kubik each tallied eight kills to spread out the attack. All three also made an impact on the defensive end as well. Chapman finished with four blocks and a pair of digs, while Granberry added three rejections. Kubik recorded seven digs on the day.
 
Redshirt junior middle blocker Emily Beeker earned the start in the contest and guided the defense with match-best five blocks. On the back row, sophomore defensive specialist Mackenzie Plante had 10 digs, while senior libero Ashllyn King finished with five assists and four digs. 
 
Set one was a back-and-forth affair with three lead changes and five tied scores, until the Lady Vols went on a 5-1 run to close out the set. The Big Orange was led on offense by Cajic who had five kills on .343 hitting, and Chapman who followed with four kills on .429 hitting. For the period, UT posted an impressive 85% (17-20) sideout percentage to keep the SC from getting any momentum early.
 
Tennessee never trailed in the second stanza thanks to 16 kills, three blocks and two aces. The back row defense had an impressive 22 digs in the set and held the Gamecocks to .150 hitting. Five Lady Vols had multiple kills led by Granberry’s four. 
 
Tennessee used a 6-0 run to gain an early lead in the third frame. Cajic controlled the offense with nine of UT’s 14 kills to secure the victory.
