Lady Vols Drop Five-Set Battle at Wofford


SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Tennessee volleyball battled back from a slow start but came up short in five sets (25-18, 25-20, 13-25, 19-25, 15-12) on the road at Wofford on Monday night.
 
The Lady Vols (5-3) finished with 62 kills on .294 hitting, 60 assists and seven aces on offense and posted 68 digs and four blocks defensively. UT finished with three attackers with double-digit kills.
 
Graduate student outside Nina Cajic recorded a team-high 17 kills to go along with season bests in digs (19) and aces (4). It marked her second double-double of the year and her sixth straight double-digit-kill match.
 
Junior middle blocker Keondreya Granberry had a season-high 13 kills on .455 hitting, two blocks and two digs. Freshman right side Paityn Chapman tallied 11 kills on .529 hitting. Redshirt junior middle blocker Emily Beeker matched her career-best in kills with nine on 12 attacks to go along with two blocks.
 
Junior right side Ajack Malual saw her first set of significant playing time as a Lady Vol, posting six kills on .455 hitting, one block and one dig. Redshirt sophomore setter Caroline Kerr finished with 48 assists, nine digs and five kills. During the match, she eclipsed the 1,500-assist mark for her career.
 
Senior libero Ashllyn King had a season-high 16 digs, five assists and two aces on the back row. Redshirt freshman outside Eryn Jones ended with seven digs and two assists, while sophomore defensive specialist Sydney Jaynes added six digs.
 
UT started slow in the opening frame, quickly facing a 21-8 deficit. The Big Orange would go on a 10-2 run to pull within five of the Terriers, but four Wofford aces and nine Lady Vol attacking errors were too much to overcome. Chapman and Granberry both had three kills in the period.
 
Both teams went back and forth to begin the second stanza, but Tennessee couldn’t keep up with Wofford’s .484 hitting percentage. The Lady Vols bounced back in the third set, though, rallying behind an 11-1 run. The Big Orange offense finally got momentum and outhit the Terriers .419 to .059. Beeker paced UT with three kills and a pair of blocks.
 
The Lady Vols kept it rolling in the fourth frame, recording 16 kills and a pair of aces to even the match at 2-2. After Wofford cut UT’s lead in the period to two at 17-15, Tennessee closed out the stanza on an 8-3 swing to force a fifth set. The Big Orange would come up short in the final frame, as the Terriers hit .364 while UT had four attacking…
