NORMAN Okla. – The 20th-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols fell in four sets (27-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-23) on the road against Oklahoma.
The Lady Vols (8-4, 1-1 SEC) were led by graduate outside hitter Nina Cajic, who finished the day with 22 kills on .429 hitting to go along with seven digs and two aces. The Big Orange hit .388 in the match but didn’t get enough on the defensive end to come out victorious with 34 digs and five blocks.
Junior middle blocker Keondreya Granberry added 13 kills on .611 hitting, a career-high-tying five digs, three blocks and one assist. Freshman middle blocker Chelsea Sutton posted a season-high nine kills on .615 hitting and two blocks. Redshirt sophomore setter Caroline Kerr ended the day with 47 assists, four digs, three kills and an ace.
In total, the match saw 41 ties and 11 lead changes. Oklahoma (7-3, 1-1 SEC) had 63 kills, nine aces and eight blocks to outlast UT.
Both teams had the hot hand offensively to open the match. The Big Orange hit .480 in the set, as Cajic had seven kills on eight attacks to pace the team. The Sooners countered with 18 kills on .424 hitting and five aces to gain the early advantage.
The Lady Vols responded by opening the second stanza on an 11-4 run, but Oklahoma answered with a 9-2 swing of its own to even things up at 13-13. From there, both teams went back and forth until the Sooners capped the set on a 6-3 run, further extending their lead in the match.
Tennessee got on the board in the third period thanks to a 10-3 swing to end the period. The Big Orange defense held Oklahoma to .133 hitting compared to UT’s .367. Just like the rest of the match, the fourth and final frame was determined by runs. After the Sooners jumped out to a 9-3 lead, the Lady Vols responded and would take a 20-16 lead. From there, Oklahoma answered with a final 9-3 swing to win the contest.
