Lady Vols Fall at Ole Miss


OXFORD, Miss. – Tennessee fell on the road Friday night at Ole Miss in four sets (25-19, 13-25, 25-19, 25-22).
 
Junior outside hitter Hayden Kubik recorded the second double-double of her career, and graduate transfer outside Nina Cajic finished with another 20-kill effort on the night. However, the Lady Vols (8-5, 1-2 SEC) were outpaced by the Rebel (11-3, 1-1 SEC) offense that finished with 61 kills, 58 assists and six aces compared to UT’s 50 kills, 47 assists and three aces.
 
Cajic recorded a match-best 22 kills on .354 hitting to go along with six digs, two aces and a block. Averaging 5.5 kills per set, the effort marked her fourth time eclipsing 20 kills in a contest this season. Kubik ended the night with 12 digs, 11 kills and one block. Redshirt sophomore setter Caroline Kerr guided the offense with 40 assists and three kills to go along with eight digs and a block.
 
At the net, junior middle blocker Keondreya Granberry posted six kills and three blocks, while freshman middle blocker Chelsea Sutton had five kills and three blocks. Tennessee finished with 47 digs and seven blocks on the night.
 
Tennessee started slow in the first set, getting out hit .367 to .192 by the Rebels. The Lady Vols had five attacking errors and two service errors to keep the offense from getting in a rhythm out the gate.
 
UT opened the second stanza with the hot hand thanks to an 8-2 run and never let up. The Big Orange finished with 13 kills on .565 hitting while holding Ole Miss to .069 hitting. Cajic got the offense rolling with six kills in the frame.
 
The Rebels regained the lead in the match after posting 18 kills to outpace the Lady Vols in the third set. UT played well offensively in the fourth frame, but the defense couldn’t get enough stops as Ole Miss won the period and the contest.
 
Up next, Tennessee heads to Mississippi State to take on the Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. ET.
