Li Earns Fourth Pac-12 Freshman Of The Week Nod

Freshman Maggie Li collected 40 kills and 22 digs over the past two matches.

Star Rookie Is Nation’s Top Freshman In Kills Per Set, Points Per Set

California standout Maggie Li was named the Pac-12 Volleyball Freshman of the Week for the fourth time this season on Monday.

Li, who earlier became the first Pac-12 freshman in history to start the season with three consecutive honors, helped Cal break a 57-match losing streak to conference opponents on Friday as the Golden Bears toppled Arizona in four sets, posting her second straight double-double – and seventh of the season – with 21 kills and 13 digs on .340 hitting. She followed that up with a 19-kill, nine-dig performance on Sunday against then-No. 25 Arizona State, marking her 10th match leading the Bears in kills; 13 of Cal’s 15 matches this season have seen Li cross the double-digit kills mark. Li currently ranks as the nation’s No. 1 freshman in both kills per set (4.18) and points per set (4.78) while being No. 2 in total kills (234) and points (267.5). She ranks among the Pac-12’s top-five overall players in all four categories, as well as total service aces.

“Maggie has felt the increase of talent in conference play and it has given her a new level of hunger to add more variety to her offense,” interim head coach Crissy Jones Schoonderwoerd said. “She is working on new skills in practice to improve her game, as she has a real passion for volleyball and is always looking to better herself.”

Li and the Bears will be on the road this weekend, taking on No. 4 Washington State (14-1, 4-0 Pac-12) on Friday night and Washington (10-5, 1-3 Pac-12) on Sunday.
