COLUMBIA, Ky. – At Biggers Sports Center, the Lindsey Wilson volleyball team’s comeback efforts were cut short versus the University of Tennessee Southern, as the Firehawks two-set lead held up in the end en route to a 3-1 decision.
Despite their attack improving over the course of the match, the Blue Raiders were unable to stifle the visitor’s defense. The Firehawks displayed good poise in their backline, committing only four reception errors while producing 66 total digs.
Even still, the hosts finished with four players in double-figures in kills, including Savanah Pippin with a match-high 14. All told, Lindsey Wilson closed with a 0.253 attack percentage after starting the day hitting below 10 percent in the first set.
The Firehawks used that slow start by their opposition to their advantage to claim the opening frame, 25-16. Then, in the second set, the travelers found the edge late after the Blue Raiders led by as many as four points.
Lindsey Wilson put forth its strongest showing in the subsequent frame, racing out to a 7-3 advantage with the help of strikes by Alexis Smith and Pippin. After the Firehawks navigated back into contention to knot the score at 8-8, a handful of strong kills by the home side restored the cushion and eventually led to a 17-8 run by the Blue Raiders to put themselves back into the match.
The fourth set was a back-and-forth affair with both sides trading small leads all the way down to the final point. Unfortunately, it was Tennessee Southern recording the deciding blow, effectively sealing the deal.
Aside from Pippin’s performance offensively, Elisa Burzio finished with 11 kills, and Aleksandra Wyrzkowska and Smith each contributed 10.
Camryn Rich paced the Blue Raider setters with 43 assists, while Embry Burgess notched a…
