Maggie Li is the first player to earn two straight Pac-12 weekly awards in program history.
Star Freshman Sets New Milestone For Cal Volleyball
California outside hitter Maggie Li’s impact on the Golden Bears’ 5-0 start – their best since 2019 – was recognized for the second straight week as she repeated as the Pac-12 Conference Volleyball Freshman of the Week on Monday.
Li is just the second Cal player to be named a two-time Freshman of the Week, joining Christina Higgins who did the same in 2011. More impressively, Li is the first player in program history to win any Pac-12 award in consecutive weeks.
In a 3-1 victory against Portland State last Friday, Li led both teams with 20 kills and tied for a court-high three service aces while adding nine digs on the night. She posted 13 kills on .579 hitting, once again tying for a court-high two aces, in a sweep of Southern Utah the following day. Currently, she ranks fourth among all NCAA freshmen in points per set (4.71), fifth in kills per set (3.94) and is tied for seventh in aces per set (0.65).
“Maggie is a very physical player,” interim head coach Crissy Jones Schoonderwoerd said. “She is also such a humble and driven athlete – she gives it her all every day in practice, and it is rare that she feels satisfied. She is a hard and diligent worker, and her talent, dedication and upbeat personality make her very special.”
Li and the Golden Bears return to action on Wednesday at Haas Pavilion with a 7 p.m. PT first serve against Saint Mary’s.
