Martell Reaches 1,000 Career Assists in Win Over Neumann

IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Immaculata men’s volleyball team was back in action at Alumnae Hall on Tuesday night, as they defeated Neumann University 3-1.

Immaculata Junior setter Joe Martell became the first player in the men’s program history to reach 1,000 career assists. Martell reached this honor during the third set of tonight’s match and he now has 1,012 assists in his career. Martell’s 449 assists this season breaks his own program record for assists in a single season of 431 that he set in 2022.

In the first set, Immaculata opened a quick 4-1 lead as John Bohrer served two consecutive points for the Macs. Neumann would use a four-point run to take a 5-4 lead. Immaculata would use a three-point run and a four-point run to open a 18-13 lead. Jack Debes would serve three consecutive points to put Immaculata on the brink of winning the set at 24-20. Immaculata won the first set 25-21 on a kill from Garrett Pepper.

In set two Neumann used a six-point run to take a 12-8 lead. Immaculata battled back to take a 21-19 lead as Joe Martell served two consecutive points. Neumann would use a four-point run to take a 23-21 lead and would hold on to take set two 26-24.

In set three, Neumann jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead, before Immaculata would battle back on a kill by Steven Dao and a pair of kills from Garrett Pepper to tie the score at 4-4. Immaculata used a four-point run to take a 10-7 lead as Steven Dao served three consecutive points. Immaculata would go on to take set three 25-19 on Joe Martell’s kill.

In set four, Neumann would once again open an early 4-1 lead….
