COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Maryland volleyball team hosts Michigan State on Friday night and No.3 Nebraska on Sunday afternoon as it continues Big Ten conference play.
Friday night’s match will be the team’s first primetime match of the year and air on Big Ten Network. Sunday’s matinee match will be streamed on B1G+.
While tickets remain for Friday’s meeting with Sparty, Sunday’s match against the Cornhuskers is sold out with the largest pre-sale in program history.
THIS WEEK’S STORYLINES
B1g Time
- The Terps continue Big Ten play on Friday, September 30 against the Michigan State Spartans and then on Sunday, October 2 against the No.3 Nebraska Cornhuskers.
- Friday’s game against the Spartans will be featured on Big Ten Network and marks the team’s first primetime match of the season. The Terps toppled Rutgers in three sets on October 31, 2021, in their last Big Ten Network match.
- Last season, the Terps went 7-13 in conference. The victories featured wins over Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan State, Rutgers, and Northwestern. The seven wins were a program-best dating back to 2018.
- The 2022 Big Ten slate was highlighted with a conference-opening victory over then-No.2 Wisconsin, the eventual National Champions.
Third Set Thunder
- Maryland is 12-2 in the third set this season, winning every set after intermission besides one against Mercer.
- The Terps are outscoring opponents 338 to 258 in the third set this year for an average third set score of 24.1-18.4.
Top tier defense
- Maryland once again leads the nation in blocks per set with 3.3 and the team’s 173.5 total blocks are also an NCAA- best. Last season the Terps finished the season atop the nation with 3.1 blocks per set and348.5 total blocks.
- Individually, Milan Gomillion is fourth in the Big Ten with 164 digs per set while the Terps are fifth as a team with 538.
- Opponent’s are hitting only .145 against Maryland’s defense. That rates fourth in the Big Ten and 17th in the NCAA.
