TROY, N.Y. – First-year Shannon McGrath of the Union College women’s volleyball team continued to rack up the honors this week, as the rookie outside hitter was named to the All-Liberty League second team, the conference announced on Wednesday.
McGrath was one of four first-years named to the All-Liberty League teams this season, and is the first Union women’s volleyball first-year named to the All-Conference second team or higher since Gillian Gore ’21 in 2017.
McGrath had an excellent rookie season for Union as the team’s top outside hitter, leading the team with 283 kills and 47 service aces to go with 194 digs and 22 assists. She finished the year third in the Liberty League in both kills per set (3.58) and service aces per set (0.59) and also ranked second among all conference players in points per set (4.23). Nationally, she currently ranks eighth among first-years in points per set and 51st overall.
The first-year was recognized four times by the Liberty League in seven weeks of competition this season, the most awards for any Liberty League women’s volleyball player in 2022. She was named the Liberty League Performer of the Week on September 12 and earned Rookie of the Week honors in each of her last three weeks of the season, taking the honor in early October and in each of the final two weeks of the year.
With McGrath leading the way, Union finished the 2022 season with a 13-15 record and reached the Liberty League Tournament for the first time since 2016, earning the program’s first postseason win since 2015 in the process.
