CHESTER, Pa.—The Elizabethtown men’s volleyball team struggled to get going Tuesday at Widener which led to the Pride sweeping the Blue Jays, 3-0.
Nick Chapman led the team with 10 kills and three aces. Alex Finch totaled nine kills while Nate Seeger tallied 24 assists.
Early in the first set it was tight as Widener led, 4-3. Widener gained some momentum as they grabbed a 15-6 lead after an Etown error. Elizabethtown continued to struggle some but had come within five points of Widener after a kill from Cody Boyer and Pride errors. Three straight kills from the Blue Jays left the team trailing 20-17. Etown couldn’t catch up from there as Widener took set one, 25-21.
Etown started off with a 5-3 lead in set two after kills from Chapman and Finch along with a Chapman ace. Widener took the lead after three straight points to bring the score to 8-7 and then grabbed four more in a row to extend their lead. Two Pride attack errors sandwiched a Chapman ace to tie up the set, 14-14. The two teams traded points through the end of the set with Widener coming out on top, 25-21.
Widener came out swinging in set three as they jumped to an early, 16-6 lead. Etown continued to trail at 20-12 as Chapman, Finch, and Logan Smith added kills. Two Pride errors gave the Blue Jays some relief before Widener came within one of match point. Etown fought back tallying five straight but ultimately fell, 25-20.
The Blue Jays have a big weekend ahead of them as they travel to #13 Nazareth, Friday February 23 at 7PM.
