Michigan Opens Up Conference Play with Dominant Sweep of Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Led by Jacque Boney‘s 14 kills, the University of Michigan volleyball team cruised to a sweep over Rutgers (25-15, 25-17, 25-11) on Friday (Sept. 23) at Jersey Mike’s Arena to open Big Ten Conference play. With the win, the Wolverines are now 10-0 all-time against the Scarlet Knights.

Boney also hit at an .812 clip while leading U-M with four blocks, and Hannah Grant paced Michigan wuth nine digs. Scottee Johnson led U-M in assists with 17, and Maddie Dowd chipped in 16.

Boney set the tone for the Wolverines in the first set, providing five kills and a .667 hitting percentage, while Jess Mruzik recorded four kills and two blocks. The Maize and Blue got out to a quick lead behind Mruzik at the service line to give it a four-point lead. Jess Robinson spurred an 8-0 run to extend U-M’s lead (19-10) later in the stanza. Kendall Murray ended the opening set with a kill down the line to help Michigan (10-1, 1-0 Big Ten) a 10-point victory in the first set.
