Mikenzie Martens Selected as SUNYAC Women's Volleyball Defensive Athlete of the Week


Cortland senior defensive specialist/libero Mikenzie Martens (Carthage) has been chosen as the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women’s Volleyball Defensive Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sept. 22.
 
Martens averaged 6.2 digs per set in a 2-1 weekend for the Red Dragons at the Messiah Invitational. One week after reaching the career 1,000-dig mark, Martens matched her career high with 31 digs and added three aces in a four-set win over the host Falcons on Friday. On Saturday, she totaled 21 digs and two aces in a loss to Gettysburg and 10 digs in a sweep of Rowan.
 
In 38 sets this fall over 12 matches, Martens ranks second in the SUNYAC with 4.9 digs per set and also has 17 aces and a .965 serve reception percentage.
 
Cortland (9-3) will compete this weekend at the Johns Hopkins Invitational. The Red Dragons will face Mary Washington Friday and Eastern University (Pa.) and the nationally fifth-ranked host Blue Jays on Saturday.
