Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, September 22, 2024 – The Philippines’ Monolith Sky Risers defeated Iran’s Saipa Club 3-1 (25-19, 25-18, 19-25, 25-18) in Pool B of the 2024 Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship.
Alyssa Jae Solomon scored 22 big points with captain Mhicaela Belen adding 22 markers in Sunday afternoon’s victory at the Chartchai Hall.
“We came here not just to play and gather experience, but we also wanted to showcase our skills as a team. We knew that we would be up against really strong teams, and we need to be an equally strong team to compete in this field,” said Belen, who is leading a team of university stand-outs.
Monolith Sky Risers started off with strategic service, scoring off a string of aces in the opener. When rallies were prolonged, they showed much composure and patience in recycling their plays.
Belen played a solid all-around game, while Solomon looked formidable from the right wing.
Saipa Club clearly had the taller line-up and they needed to utilize this to their advantage. They showed they could set up Aytak Salamat from the flank, but firstly, they needed smoother movement in their passing lanes. Head coach Niloofar Hojati tried to resolve this by bringing in her substitutes, but they could not seem to establish their system.
The Iran club upped their game in the third set, imposing their blocks upon their opponents. They clearly needed to maximize in this department, as they enjoyed the benefit of a tall frontline. Soon enough, the opposing team needed to devise workarounds against the block formation, but miscalculations proved costly.
Saipa Club tried to maintain their stake in the match executing transitions to their favor, and timing their blocks well.
The Philippines’ side played catch up, activating clutch explosive runs from Evangeline Alinsug, which helped seal the victory in four sets.
Monolith Sky Risers will face Vietnam’s LP Bank Binh Ninh on Monday, September 23, at 13:00 Thailand time. Saipa Club will play against Japan’s NEC Red Rockets Kawasaki in the earlier match scheduled at 10:00 Thailand time.
