Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, September 24, 2024 – Japan’s NEC Red Rockets Kawasaki claimed the top spot in Pool B of the 2024 Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship after a straight-sets win, 3-0 (26-24, 25-13, 25-18) over the Philippines’ Monolith Sky Risers at Chartchai Hall.
Yoshino Sato bested all scorers with 18 points. Haruyo Shimamura contributed another 12 points for the Japan club’s third straight win in the competition.
NEC Red Rockets ran their usual system and trademark tempo. Their speed in defense complemented their quick passing to set up the plays for their prolific outside hitter Sato. Kasumi Nojima was in charge of working the middle.
Monolith Sky Risers made a legitimate claim in the first set, activating the attacks of Alyssa Jae Solomon from the right flank. Meanwhile, Mhicaela Belen showed good backcourt skills and delivered likewise on attack. They forced an extended set but were later edged out by their opponents.
The Japan club rocketed to a huge advantage in the second, even after trailing behind in the opening sequences. They were able to effectively line up their blocks and this added an entirely new facet to their performance. Soon enough, their opponents, in an effort to work around the blocks, were trying too much, or too little to execute the plays and they simply misfired several attacks.
The third set was not far different, with the Japan club mounting a comfortable lead. What truly set them apart was the quality of their floor defense, and how they protected the ball at all costs. They maintained this commitment all throughout, which helped in staging the sweep on Tuesday afternoon.
Teams now await the results of the other matches in the Preliminary Phase to be completed Tuesday evening, in order to determine respective match-ups in the Quarterfinals.
