Zeimann and Polley, and Fuller and Nicklin earn first beach volleyball gold of the year
New Zealand, where the summer is already in full swing, was the first to organise a national beach volleyball tour event in 2024. The first of four tournaments on the 2024 GJ Gardner Homes NZ Beach Tour, presented by Tip Top, came to a close at Mount Maunganui Beach on Sunday.
Alice Zeimann and Shaunna Polley lived up to their top-seed status and won the women’s gold after a 2-0 (21-14, 21-10) sweep of the final against Kalea Norton and Danielle Quigley. The duo finished the tournament without losing a single set in four matches played.
The bronze went to Kiana Stevenson and Maria Hanabadi. They produced a 2-0 (21-13, 22-20) win over Meile Rose Green and Katie Sadlier in the third-place match.
The top-seeded team triumphed in the men’s competition too. Bradley Fuller and Alani Nicklin (pictured in the main photo blocking; credits: Phototek) defeated John McManaway and Thomas Reid by a hard-fought 2-0 (21-18, 21-17) in the gold medal match.
Thomas Hartles and Ben O’Dea delivered a 2-0 (22-20, 21-16) win over Martin Kaufer and Ky Landers for the bronze.
The next stop on New Zealand’s national tour will be in Auckland from 26 to 28 January. Another stop will take place in Christchurch from 9 to 11 February, before the tour returns to Mount Maunganui for the Finals scheduled from 16 to 18 February.
