No. 11 Tech Sullies Stetson – Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — No. 11 Georgia Tech volleyball (6-0) earned its sixth straight victory to open the season with a sweep (25-12, 25-16, 25-13) of Stetson (5-4) on Saturday in the Al Lawson Center.

The Yellow Jackets controlled the match from wire to wire, picking up their second consecutive sweep and third of the season. The White and Gold also tied their largest set margin of the year with a 13-point advantage in the first set, shutting down the Hatters offensively by nearly holding them to a 0 hitting percentage.

Tech outmatched the Hatters in all phases, owning stark advantages in kills (53-19), hitting percentage (.348-.063), aces (9-2) and digs (57-39).

Freshman outside hitter Larissa Mendes fronted the Jacket attack yet again with 14 kills at a blistering .619 clip. Close behind with another well-rounded performance was fellow outside hitter and senior Tamara Otene with 11 kills and 11 digs for her fourth double double of the season.

Senior setter Bella D’Amico was a force on both ends for the Jackets as she orchestrated the offense with 29 assists while tallying 13 digs for her third double double of the year. Senior libero Paola Pimentel anchored the back end, leading the unit with 16 digs total while sophomore middle blocker Liv Mogridge totaled four blocks (one solo, three assisted) on top of nine kills on a .533 hitting percentage.

Three Jackets made their collegiate debuts as sophomore middle blocker Anna Boezi led the pack with seven kills at a scorching .750 clip. Freshman setter Deren Chukur also picked up a kill and three assists while freshman libero Zoe Winford scooped a dig as well.

How it Happened

Georgia Tech didn’t give Stetson any space to breathe in set one, rolling from start to finish for a 25-12 first-set victory. Although the Hatters managed to make a late push in set two, the second set was much of the same as the Yellow Jackets sped in front and cruised to a 25-16 second-set win. Set three was closer in the early stages as the two squads were tied 8-8, but Tech took control from there. The White and Gold went on to claim 17 of the next 22 points, resulting in a 25-13 third-set triumph and match sweep.
