MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. — No. 2 UCLA (21-1) posted two wins on Friday at the East Meets West Invitational at the iconic Manhattan Beach Pier. The Bruins defeated No. 16 FIU (9-12), 5-0, and then posted their second win of the year over No. 5 LSU (17-7), 4-1. The teams from the West (No. 2 UCLA, No. 3 USC, No. 7 LMU, and No. 8 Hawai’i went 7-1 against the teams from the East (No. 4 Florida State, No. 5 LSU, No. 11 Georgia State, No. 16 FIU) today.
In the first dual against the FIU Panthers, the Bruins picked up their 15th sweep of the year while improving to 9-0 all-time in the series. Graduate students Jaden Whitmarsh and Marlie Monserez clinched the win on court five, defeating FIU’s Alice Pratesi and Emily Meyer, 21-19, 21-17.
In the second dual against the Tigers, the Bruins improved to 16-2 in the series with their eighth-straight win over LSU. Whitmarsh and Monserez again clinched UCLA’s win with a 21-10, 21-17 over LSU’s Amber Haynes and Brooke Blutreich on court five.
The Bruins return to action tomorrow when they face No. 11 Georgia State at 10:30 a.m. PT and then close the tournament with a rematch against No. 4 Florida State at 2:30 p.m. PT.
