STANFORD, Calif. — No. 4 UCLA (23-2) picked up its 16th sweep of the season with a 5-0 victory over the ninth-ranked Golden Bears of California (18-6) to open play at the Pac-12 North Invitational on Friday morning at Stanford’s Beach Volleyball Stadium. The Bruins improved to 12-0 all-time against California with the win. It marked UCLA’s eighth sweep of a nationally ranked team in 2023 and the fourth over a Top 10 team.
Senior Rileigh Powers and graduate student Haley Hallgren put the Bruins up 1-0 with a straight-set win on court four over Cal’s Natalie Martin and Maya Gessner, 24-22, 21-17. Powers and Hallgren improved to 23-0 on the year (18-0 on court four and 5-0 on court five).
Junior Peri Brennan and graduate student Abby Van Winkle made it 2-0 Bruins with a three-set thriller. The UCLA duo defeated the Golden Bears’ Ashley Delgado and Ainsley Radell on court two, 21-19, 16-21, 15-12. The Bruin duo improved to 16-0 on the year (13-0 on court two and 3-0 on court one).
Graduate student Kelli Greene-Agnew and sophomore Natalie Myszkowski clinched the dual win over the Golden Bears with a 21-13, 21-18 win over Brooke Buchner and Alex Young-Gomez on court five. The UCLA tandem improved to 7-2 on the year (6-1 on court five and 1-1 on court four).
Sophomore Jessie Smith and junior Tessa Van Winkle put UCLA up 4-0 with a 21-14, 21-16 win on court three over California’s Marilu Pally and Ella Dreibholz. The Bruin pair improved to 5-2 on the year, all on court three.
Senior Lexy Denaburg and freshman Maggie Boyd completed the sweep with a 21-19, 21-17 take down of Sierra Caffo and Liz Waters-Leiga on court one. The UCLA duo improved to 15-3 on the season, all on court one.
The Bruins return to action at 3:00 p.m. today when they face No. 10 Stanford on the Pac-12 Networks.
