COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 7 Ohio State Buckeyes (5-5, 1-1 B1G) fell in five sets (22-25, 26-24, 25-19, 20-25, 13-15) at No. 3 Nebraska (10-1, 2-0 B1G) on the road to wrap up the opening weekend of Big Ten play on Saturday night in front of a sold-out crowd.
Nebraska took the first set by a 25-22 margin after Ohio State’s comeback fell short. The Buckeyes evened the match at one with a 26-24 win in the second set following a late rally from the Huskers. After falling behind early in the third set, Ohio State used a 13-3 run to take a commanding lead and won the set by a 25-19 margin. Nebraska forced a fifth set with a 25-20 win in the fourth set after holding just a narrow lead during the majority of the set. The Huskers captured a 15-13 win in an even fifth set.
How it Happened
Nebraska began the match with a kill and took an early 4-1 lead. The Huskers held a narrow lead until Emily Londot’s second kill of the match tied the set at nine. Nebraska responded with the next three points and maintained that three-point lead, 15-12, at the media timeout. The Huskers used a pair of 3-0 runs to extend their lead to 19-14 and force the Buckeyes to take a timeout. Ohio State got back within three at 20-17 on a kill from Gabby Gonzales. The Buckeyes put together a 5-2 run to trim the deficit to two, 22-20, forcing a Nebraska timeout following a block from Londot and Rylee Rader. The Huskers won the set by a 25-22 mark.
Londot began the second set with her fifth kill before three-unanswered points from the Huskers. Ohio State put together a 6-2 run to take the 8-6 advantage on a kill from Adria Powell. Nebraska responded with three-unanswered points to take the lead back at 9-8. OSU also had a 3-0 run to take a 12-10 lead, but the Huskers tied the set again at 12. The Buckeyes took the 15-14 lead into the media timeout with a block from Mac Podraza and Rader. Ohio State extended its run to five-consecutive points to lead 19-14 and force a Nebraska timeout. The Buckeyes led 20-14 before a 3-0 Huskers run closed the gap to 20-17 and prompted an Ohio State timeout. Another kill from Londot gave OSU the 23-18 advantage to force another Husker timeout. Nebraska scored the next three to cut the Ohio State lead to 23-21 as the Buckeyes then called timeout. The Huskers used a 3-0 run to tie the set at 24 but the Buckeyes took the set by a 26-24 margin.
