EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon volleyball team has added to its depth at middle blocker with the addition of Onye Ofoegbu as announced Wednesday by head coach Matt Ulmer. Ofoegbu, a standout for UC Irvine for the past four years, was an AVCA All-America Honorable Mention performer in 2022.
This past season, Ofoegbu was second in the Big West with a .372 hitting percentage to go along with a career-high 3.39 kills per set, 4.31 points per set, 1.28 blocks per set and 24 service aces. She led the Big West with 143 total blocks, and ranked among the top 40 in the NCAA in hitting percentage and blocks per set.
Along with her All-America recognition, Ofoegbu was named to the 2022 AVCA All-Pacific South Region Team and was a two-time Big West First Team selection for the Anteaters. She was an all-freshman pick in 2019 and was twice named Big West Offensive Player of the Weekend during her career in Irvine.
Ofoegbu recorded double-digit kills in 27 of 30 matches in 2022, coupled with a .300 or higher hitting percentage in 22 of those 27 occasions. She posted a season-high 20 kills while hitting .548 against Cal Poly (Nov. 25), a match in which she also had five blocks and five digs. Ofoegu has a career high of 23 kills—hitting .688—from a four-set outing against Cal State Fullerton in 2021.
The Cerritos, Calif., native had 16 matches in 2022 with five or more blocks including a nine-block effort against DePaul (Aug. 27) and three additional outings with eight blocks. Ofoegbu twice tallied 10 blocks during the 2021 season, completing double-doubles with 17 and 13 kills against Lafayette and UC San Diego, respectively.
In a breakout 2021 season, Ofoegbu was 15th in the NCAA with a .409 hitting percentage while averaging 3.18 kills per set and 1.26 blocks per set, a figure that ranked 32nd in the nation.
Ofoegbu is the latest of three graduate transfers announced by the Ducks this offseason, along with the additions of fellow middle Kara McGhee and outside hitter Gabby Gonzales.
Oregon finished the 2022 campaign with a 26-6 record and a postseason run to the Elite Eight for a third time in program history. The Ducks’ win total (26) is tied for third on the program’s single-season list and dating back to the 2021 season, UO has won 18-consecutive matches at Matthew Knight Arena including a 14-0 home mark this past year.
