Opportunities, Wolverines Escape From Huskies

Box Score ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Washington Volleyball could have easily found itself up 2-0 on the road at Michigan today but the Wolverines played cleaner at the ends of the sets and then closed out the win in the third for a frustrating 25-27, 23-25, 20-25 loss for the Huskies. Washington had a set point chance in the first set and a 23-19 lead in the second and knows it can’t let chances like that go by the wayside if it wants to win on the road.

The Huskies (13-4, 3-4 Big Ten) lost their fourth match in a row despite outhitting the Wolverines (15-3, 5-2 Big Ten) for the match, an unpleasant rarity in a three setter. UW hit .333, its second-highest percentage in Big Ten play, and had sizable attack percentage advantages in each of the first two sets, but dominant serving from UM’s Valentina Vaulet helped swing each set for the home team. Vaulet had six aces but many more that put UW out of system. It was Vaulet that served a 6-0 run for Michigan to swipe the second set from Washington’s grasp.

Emoni Bush and Kierstyn Barton each had 11 kills, with Madi Endsley hitting .500 with eight kills and no errors to go along with four block assists. Lauren Bays had 13 digs and Molly Wilson had 18 assists with Alexis Haury adding 15. UW played without standout freshman middle Julia Hunt tonight.

In the first set, the Huskies outhit Michigan, .429 to .317, had more kills (18-17) and more digs (16-11) and had a set point at 24-23, but Michigan saved it and then got an ace off the net that fell over, ultimately winning in extra points.

The second set saw the Dawgs post a 4-0 edge in blocks and hit .250 compared to just .146 for Michigan, but Michigan did have a 17-10 edge in kills and stormed back from 19-23 down by winning the final six points in a row.

Washington made a push early in set three and had a 12-7 lead, but Michigan soon went off on another 7-0 run to move back in front and the Huskies could not slow down the UM offense in the third, as Michigan made zero errors and hit .500 in the last set, overcoming a still strong UW attack that had 13 kills and just one error to hit .316.

Up Next: The Huskies need to stop their slide when they visit East Lansing on Sunday to take on the Michigan State Spartans at 1 p.m. Eastern, 10 a.m. Pacific. It will be another live stream-only match on B1G+
