Islamabad, Pakistan, May 14, 2024 – Hosts Pakistan overcame a strong challenge from Turkmenistan to emerge triumphant with hard-fought 3-1 win for three in a row at the 2nd Engro Central Asian Volleyball Association (CAVA) Nations League at Liaqat Gymnasium inside PSB Sports Complex in Islamabad, Pakistan on Monday.
Contesting the single round-robin preliminaries, Pakistan, fresh from 3-0 demolition of Afghanistan and Sri Lanka on the first two days, put up a commendable fight against Turkmenistan. The strong visitors attacked well, but the host side remained in good form to relentlessly counter-attack with exceptional spikes and solid blocks.
Pakistan took the close first set 25-23, went down to the determined Turkmenistan in the second set 21-25, but bounced back effectively to win the next two sets in thrilling fashion 26-24, 27-25 for a dramatic 3-1 win.
Earlier, Sri Lanka, which lost their first two matches at hands of Kyrgyzstan and Pakistan, tasted their first victory in the eight-day tournament on Monday, displaying outstanding performance to seal convincing 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-14) win against Afghanistan.
Kyrgyzstan also made their mark on Monday, showcasing their strength and strategy to surprisingly defeat Iran in a tightly-contested match 27-25, 25-23, 25-19.
Tuesday is the rest day. The competition resumes on Wednesday, with Sri Lanka going up against Iran, Afghanistan challenging Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan facing off against hosts Pakistan.
