Panthers Host Boston College and Syracuse for ACC Home Opener


PITTSBURGH – The No. 8 Pitt volleyball team (11-2, 2-0 ACC) is set for the ACC home opener this weekend, hosting Boston College (11-5, 0-2 ACC) on Friday night at 7 p.m. and Syracuse (2-10, 0-2 ACC) on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both matches will be available for viewing on ACCNX. 

The Panthers dominate the all-time series against Boston College 37-1, losing the only match to the Eagles in 2000. Most recently the Panthers swept Boston College in the Fitzgerald Field House on Nov. 26, 2022, to clinch a share of the ACC Championship. The Eagles come into the match 11-5 and narrowly dropped their ACC opener last week to Notre Dame, 3-2.

Pitt leads the series against Syracuse 44-13 and have won the last four matches. The Orange are 2-10 on the season and were swept by Louisville and Notre Dame this past weekend. 

GOING BACK-TO-BACK

Torrey Stafford was named ACC Freshman of the Week for the second week in a row. 

• She averaged 5.17 kills per set, 5.42 points per set and 1.67 digs per set against Duke and North Carolina.

BLOCK PARTY 

• The Pitt Panthers are currently first in the nation in blocks per set (3.19).

Chiamaka Nwokolo, Rachel Jepsen, Olivia Babcock and Emma Monks have all registered at least six blocks in a match so far this season. 

• Nwokolo tied a career high with eight blocks against North Carolina in a 3-0 sweep

STAFFORD SHINES

• Freshman Torrey Stafford was named ACC Freshman of the Week (9/18/23) for the first time after her impressive performance in the Panther Challenge. 

• Stafford registered 32 kills, 14 digs, eight blocks and six aces during the three-day span. 

PANTHERS CLAIM ACC HONORS

Olivia Babcock earned back-to-back ACC Freshman of the Week honors after registering 21 kills, eight blocks and seven digs against Marquette and Loyola Chicago.

Emma Monks was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week for the first time after recording 13 kills, 12 blocks and a pair of digs on the weekend.
