Pitt Earns No. 2 National Seed in 2022 NCAA Tournament

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh Volleyball Team (27-3, 17-1 ACC) has been awarded a No. 2 national seed and will host NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Tournament First and Second Round matches at Petersen Events Center.

NCAA TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE

Pitt earned the No. 2 seed as an at-large selection, marking its highest NCAA Tournament placement in program history. The Panthers’ previous highest seed was No. 3 in 2021, when the tournament was under a different format. The tournament field consists of four regions of 16 teams each. Regional play will be hosted by the top 16 national seeds in the tournament with the top four remaining seeds hosting the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 rounds.

“This is a really exciting time of year,” Head coach Dan Fisher said. “We’ve had great attendance at our matches lately and we have momentum coming into the tournament. We’ve proved that, at our best, we can beat anyone in the country. We’re hoping for a great turnout on Friday at the Pete, and hopefully Saturday as well. We’re all healthy and ready to make a tournament run.”

This is the Panthers’ seventh consecutive appearance in the tournament and their 18th appearance in program history. Pitt reached the Final Four in 2021, marking its longest NCAA Tournament run in program history. The Panthers have gotten to at least the Elite 8 in back-to-back NCAA Tournaments.

Pitt will take on Patriot League Champions, Colgate (24-5) Friday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m. ET in the second of two First Round matches at Petersen Events Center. Sun Belt Champion James Madison (24-4) and No.7-seed BYU (21-6) will face off in Friday’s first match at 4 p.m. ET. The winners of Friday’s matches will meet in the Second Round Saturday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. ET at Petersen Events Center.

This will be the first NCAA Tournament for graduate transfer and kills leader, Courtney Buzzerio.

“I’m really excited,” Buzzerio said. “Obviously, this being my first time in the tournament, it’s something that I’ve always wanted to do. This is a group that I feel we can go really far with and I think our seeding reflects that. We have a chance at playing BYU again, a team we saw earlier this year so that will hopefully be a great chance to show everyone how much we’ve grown as a team since that win. Overall, I’m just very excited to be a part of this…
