PITTSBURGH – The volleyball world is mourning the loss of Barry Goldberg, head coach for American University from 1989-2022. Goldberg passed away on Sunday, March 26 at the age of 61 following a Stage 4 cancer diagnosis in February of 2022.
“This is a loss for the entire volleyball community,” head coach Dan Fisher said. “Pitt lost one of its own. For us, Barry was always incredibly supportive. He always had such a great perspective of our job, showing us coaches that, at the end of the day, life wasn’t so bad coaching volleyball. He always made it a point to remind younger coaches how blessed we truly were to be in this career. He had the unique ability to light up a room and make everyone he talked to feel special. He’s an example for all coaches to follow, both in getting the most out of your players and representing yourself and your institution with grace and class.”
Goldberg, a Pitt graduate with bachelor’s degree in communication and rhetoric in 1984, played volleyball on the Pitt men’s team and began his coaching career as a graduate student with the Pitt women’s team in 1985, coaching alongside 2022 AVCA Hall of Fame inductee, Shelton Collier.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie, three children, Arielle Houlihan (Matthew), Jared Goldberg (Aryn) and Mitchell Goldberg, along with grandchildren Rylie and Hallie Houlihan and Silas, Simeon and Samson Goldberg.
