Pitt Sweeps High Point on Final Day of Panther Challenge

PITTSBURGH –The No. 8 University of Pittsburgh volleyball team (8-2, 0-0 ACC) swept High Point (6-6, 0-0 Big South), 3-0 to wrap up the Panther Challenge at the Fitzgerald Field House. Pitt ran a  balanced offense in which eight Panthers registered at least one kill.

Contrary to last night’s match, Pitt got off to a slow start in set one as High Point held an early 13-10 lead. A pair of kills and aces from freshman Torrey Stafford allowed Pitt to tie things up at 18-18. Pitt took charge at the end of the first set, as it went on a 7-2 run behind kills from Stafford, Valeria Vazquez Gomez, Emma Monks and Julianna Dalton to win the first set, 25-20.

High Point came out of the break aggressively, improving their late set one play as it pushed a 14-14 tie. High Point’s BayLea Sparks’ offense and a handful of Pitt errors allowed for the tight race. Senior Cat Flood served tough off the bench, causing three straight High Point errors. Freshman setter Haiti Tautua’a served tough from the end line and assisted Vazquez Gomez on a few kills late in the set to secure the second set victory, 25-18.

Pitt never let up in the third, holding momentum from the second set. Vazquez Gomez continued to cause High Point to be out of system as a 6-0 run allowed for an early 9-3 lead. Two more services aces from Stafford and a team .308 hitting percentage was too much for High Point to overcome, resulting in a 25-12 third set victory and 3-0 sweep.
