COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland volleyball middle blocker Rainelle Jones was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week by the conference on Monday afternoon.
Jones tallied 23 total blocks this past weekend, including two solo stuffs, while also adding 15 kills in Maryland’s three victories. She recorded at least six blocks in all three contests, with a Friday night explosion for ten total blocks against Navy.
Her 23 blocks are five more than the next closest Big Ten players, Kaitlyn Hord and Allie Holland with 18. With a current average of 2.56 blocks per set, she leads the conference by more than 0.5 blocks per set.
The Oxon Hill, Maryland, native continues to climb the Terrapin record books with 513 block assists and 568 total blocks. She’s 52 block assists and 81 total blocks away from holding the Maryland records.
This marks the third time Jones has won a Big Ten weekly honor in her career with all three being Defensive Player of the Week. Last season, she was also named First Team All-Big Ten. Just a few months ago she was named Preseason All-Big Ten.
