Red River Athletic Conference – Xavier closes out five-set victory for RRAC volleyball tournament title

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – In its first year as a conference member, Xavier captured the 2021 RRAC Volleyball Championship title, going the distance in five sets over host Our Lady of the Lake. The teams shared the conference’s regular season championship and met for the second time this season in the final on Saturday at Mabee Gymnasium.

Xavier took the first set, 25-22, as the teams alternated throughout the match. The Gold Nuggets also took the third and fifth sets in lopsided fashion, 25-12 and 15-4. OLLU claimed the second and fourth sets by 25-23 and 25-22 scores.

Attacks were even between the teams during the match at 167 apiece, but Xavier had the advantage in kills 58-36. Taylor McGee led the Gold Nuggets with 14 kills, while Vivica Price-Spraggins and Kennedy Wade also hit double-digits. The hitting percentage comparision was .192 to .054 in favor of Xavier. 

Xavier’s Semira Blair dished out 37 assists, and Linda Mungai made 27 digs. 

Four OLLU hitters finished with eight kills, and Madelynn Strzelczyk supplied 34 assists. Tina Trevino led the team in digs with 22. 

Xavier kept its string of conference championships going at 11 with the previous 10 coming in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. They will advance to the NAIA national tournament at 13-6, while OLLU falls to 19-6 on the season.
