Manama, Bahrain, May 13, 2023 – The 2023 Asian Men’s Club Volleyball Championship is taking place in Manama, Bahrain from May 14 to 21, serving as the Asian qualifying tournament from which the eventual winners will secure the lone berth up for grabs for the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship due to be held in December in India.
A total of 16 accompanying referees have been nominated by AVC to officiate at the tournament under the guidance of Referee Delegate Mr Santiago Beny Coonghe from India and Referee Sub-Committee Members Dr Khaled Al-Zughaibi from Saudi Arabia, Mohammad Shahmiri from Iran, and Mr Jirachai Kasemsook from Thailand.
Having completed the theoretical phase of the refereeing clinic in the morning, the referees attended the practical session inside the court right after.
During the Referee Clinic, all referees also stood chances to work closely with the Video Challenge. All the participating teams will take the benefit of the new-technology Video Challenge System to assist the referees in the decision making process in order to make the game absolutely fair to the athletes’ actions. This is for the first time that Bahrain Volleyball Association is making the most of the VCS.
According to the Video Challenge team, challenges are allowed for one of the following situations:
a) Ball in/out – for side and end lines
b) Block Touch – contact with the ball by the player (i.e. the blocker)
c) Net Fault – contact with the net between the antennae by the player in the action of playing the ball
d) Antenna Touch – contact with the antenna by the player or by the ball
e) Foot Fault – a) contact of the server with the playing court (end line included) or the lateral free zone outside the service zone, b) faulty contact of a player with the 3-meter attack line, c) the complete crossing of the center line by the player’s foot or feet.
“We have many experienced referees in this event. We have practiced how to use the technology and the match protocols were reviewed. We will not have national anthems in this event to save time, so the match protocol will start minus sixteen. Our referees are all ready to align with the FIVB guidelines”, Referee Delegate Mr S. Beny Coonghe said.
