Regular Season Ends With Rivalry Road Dual On Friday


TEMPE – Sun Devil Beach Volleyball travels down to Tucson for the second rivalry matchup of the season against the No. 19 Wildcats on Friday, April 21. 

This is the final regular season dual of the season before the Pac-12 Tournament. The game is scheduled to commence at 2 p.m. MST at Bear Down Beach. Live stats via StatBroadcast will be available, and fans can follow along live via Twitter and Instagram (@SunDevilBeachVB) for updates. 

These two teams met earlier this season in Tempe. Arizona State came back down 2-0 to get the 3-2 upset over then-No. 18 Arizona. ASU earned a half point in the Territorial Cup Series with the win. Friday’s matchup will also be worth a half point. In the overall Territorial Cup Series, Arizona State holds a narrow 7.5-7 advantage.

Sun Devil Outlook

Arizona State (10-11, 5-5 Pac-12)

  • The Sand Devils are coming off a successful home tournament at the Sun Devil lnvitational where the team went 2-1. Their two wins were both sweeps, one of which happened on Senior Day.
  • Duos Sweeney/Wickley and Ames/Waters went undefeated throughout the weekend, including wins over No. 7 GCU’s first and fourth pairs.
  • Veteran duo Taryn Ames and Sarah Waters currently have the winningest record for the Sand Devils. They both currently have a record of 13-8, wins coming from courts two, three, and four.
  • The top pair of Lexi Sweeney and Kylie Wickley had a successful weekend at home. They upped their record to 10-11, the second-best pair record on the team. 
  • There are six Sun Devils with double-digit wins this season. Ames and Waters have 13, freshmen Carys Thomas and Adriana Nieves Papaleo have 12, and Sweeney and Wickley have 10. 
  • In the ASU record book, Waters moved up to a tie for ninth place with 42 career wins. Right behind her are Sweeney and Ames with 40, tied for 11th. Junior Kate Fitzgerald is not far behind as well, coming in at No. 13 with 31.
  • For three Sun Devils, the in-state matchup means a big more as they are from the Valley. Sweeney, Fitzgerald and Ames are all from in and around Phoenix. 

Opponent Outlook

No. 19 Arizona (19-9, 4-5 Pac-12)

  • The Wildcats are coming off of a rough 1-3 tournament turnout in Hawaii. The team had a loss to No. 14 Georgia State, two losses to No. 8 Hawai’i, and a 3-2 win against No. 14 Georgia State.
