HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Seniors Chloe Loreen and Natalie Robinson did much this weekend to continue to establish themselves, and Washington, as a pair and a team to watch in 2022-23. Loreen and Robinson placed fourth overall at the first ever AVCA Pairs National Championships today in Alabama, coming up just two matches short of a national title.
The only Pac-12 pair to reach the semifinals of this inaugural national tourney, Loreen and Robinson had their six-match win streak snapped in the semis by TCU’s Mactavish and Vergara. In the first set, the Huskies cut the TCU lead down to one at 18-19, but TCU won the last two points to take the set, then they pulled away for a 21-14 second set win to reach the final.
In the third-place match, Robinson and Loreen had a heartbreaker, falling 21-19, 21-19 against Grand Canyon’s Hansen/Hughes, settling for fourth-place out of the field of 64.
In the backdraw, Washington’s second pair, Piper Monk-Heidrich and Teagan DeFalco, had their best day of the weekend. The two went 3-0 with two of those wins coming against Pac-12 rivals. The Huskies first defeated Arizona’s Parkhurst/Rennie in a slugfest, 22-24, 24-22, 17-15. They then had a win over College of Charleston, and ended with a 21-16, 21-18 win over Cal’s Buchner/Gessner.
