Royals Fall to Rutgers-Newark in Saturday Matchup

NEWARK, NJ – The EMU men’s volleyball team wrapped up its trip north on Saturday, taking on the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers-Newark.

RUN used big swings in all three sets en route to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-20) win over the Royals.

Highlights

  • After a service error gave EMU a 1-0 lead, the Scarlet Raiders went on a 5-0 run to take the lead. Two kills from Ben Childers, a kill from Nate McGhee and a block from Tyler Oaks and Childers pulled EMU within one. Later in the set, the Royals went on another tilt, this time 4-0, to pull back within one at 12-11. RUN would continue to hold a lead, pushing it to as many as five, but twice EMU pulled within two. With RUN leading 21-19, they scored four of the next five points to take set one.
  • The teams traded points to start set two before RUN was able to pull ahead by six and stay there. After an attack error pulled EMU within five, the Scarlet Raiders went on an 8-3 run to take set two and a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • EMU used a pair of errors and a pair of David Ward kills to start set three ahead 4-1. Rutgers-Newark would battle back and take the lead before both teams traded blows all the way to 18-18. The Scarlet Raiders, however, would go on a 5-0 run to move ahead 23-18 before EMU answered with points on back-to-back errors. But RUN would finish out the set, and the match, with a pair of points, to pick up the win.

What’s Next

EMU will return home next weekend to wrap up their 2023 home slate. They’ll kick it off with a matchup against third-ranked Juniata on Friday at 6 pm.
