PITTSBURGH – Men’s Soccer’s Luis Sahmkow and Women’s Volleyball’s Valeria Vazquez Gomez have been named this week’s PNC Achievers of the Week after a pair of career games.
Junior forward Luis Sahmkow had the best performance of his Pitt career Monday night in the 5-1 win over FDU as he was able to net a hat trick on a game-high five shots. Sahmkow opened the scoring with a penalty kick goal in the fourth minute before closing out his night with a pair of goals in the second half, just over three minutes apart from each other. The hat trick marked the first of his career and the first by a Pitt player since 2018 when Edward Kizza netted a hat trick in the win over Cleveland State. Sahmkow now leads the Panthers with five goals and 10 points on the year.
Redshirt senior Valeria Vazquez Gomez registered 27 kills, 18 digs, seven aces and hit .323 over the Panthers’ three games this past weekend. She recorded a career-high four aces in a five-set thriller against No. 7 Oregon. The outside hitter plays six rotations and has a .976 passing percentage. The Manati, Puerto Rico native has been a key part of Pitt’s back-to-back NCAA Women’s Volleyball Final Four appearances the past two seasons.
