Shemanova Passes Historic Career Milestone Against #2 Louisville

NC State

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange (8-8, 4-2 ACC) fell to the Cardinals (15-1, 6-0 ACC) in straight sets (16-25, 18-25, 17-25), on Sunday afternoon at the Women’s Building. Polina Shemanova’s 13-kill day cemented herself in the Syracuse record books against #2 Louisville. She now holds the all-time career kills record with 1,701 career kills, passing previous record holder Dana Fiume (1,698).

“We had a lot of errors that separated us from Louisville today,” said head coach Bakeer Ganesharatnam. “Those errors are what ultimately cost us today, as we were unable to catch up to an extremely talented Louisville team.”

In the third set of the match, the Orange gave it their all, managing to tie the frame up five total times. ‘Cuse and the Cards had a back-and-forth battle within the set. Syracuse was the first to 10 points, holding a two-point lead over the Cards. However, the Orange could not maintain the lead for the remainder of the set. Allowing Louisville to walk away with the victory.

In addition to Shemanova, four other Orange locked-in kills in the matchup. Shemanova, Bre Walp, Viktoriia Lokhmanchuk, Naomi Franco, and Raina Hughes combined for 31 total kills.

Syracuse now hits the road for a two-match road tilt, as the squad is set to face NC State on Friday, Oct. 14th, and North Carolina on Sunday, Oct. 16th. The match against the Wolfpack is slated to start at 7 p.m., while the meeting with the Tar Heels is set for 3 p.m. (ACCN).
