TROY, N.Y. – A sweep of the weekly awards from the Union College men’s tennis team highlighted another week of superlative performances from Union student-athletes and teams last week, as the Garnet Chargers earned a season-high five Liberty League weekly awards and added eight nominations to the weekly honor roll.
Men’s Tennis Singles Performer of the Week: Ian Schunk
Schunk went 3-0 to capture the “A” Singles title at the Garnet Charger Invitational over the weekend. He won a pair of matches to reach Sunday’s final, taking down Drew’s Daniel Arcari, 6-1, 6-2, in the quarterfinals and then outlasting St. Lawrence’s Edvin Strandberg in a supertiebreaker, 4-6, 6-0, (11-9) He took home the title with a hard-fought 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 victory over SLU’s Broderick Pinto, coming back from 2-5 in the first set to even the frame at five and then saving a set point serving at 5-6 before holding on in the opening tiebreaker.
Men’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week: Ben Jacobs and Jesus Sosa
Jacobs and Sosa went 3-0 to claim the “A” Doubles title at the Garnet Charger Invitational over the weekend, winning once on Saturday and twice on Sunday. The pair started the weekend with an 8-5 win over Nicolas Mobayed and Dikshan Chhikara of Drew in the quarterfinals. Returning to the court for day two, the tandem defeated St. Lawrence’s Edvin Strandberg and John Hill-Edgar, 8-3, in the semifinals before cruising past Drew’s Jesse Faro and Daniel Arcari, 8-1.
Field Hockey Defensive Performer of the Week: Sophie Brady
Brady made five saves to earn her first shutout of the season and extend her personal shutout streak to 183:56 in a 3-0 victory over SUNY Oneonta in Union’s only game of the week. After going without an on-target shot over the first 30 minutes, Brady made one save in the third period and made four more down the stretch to preserve the shutout and her fourth victory of the season.
Men’s Tennis Rookie of the Week: Vivaan Gupta
Gupta had a very successful week for Union, posting a combined record of 7-1 with five doubles victories and two singles wins. He won two matches to reach the finals of the “B” Singles bracket at the Garnet Charger Invitational before coming up a supertiebreaker short to teammate Ben Jacobs in the final.
