Soaring Eagles Comeback for First Win of the Year

COBLESKILL, N.Y. –  Elmira College women’s volleyball opened its match against SUNY Cobleskill with a comeback win in five sets over the SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers. Madi Conti ’28 (16) Asia Curkendall ’25 (13), and Makenna Clark ’25 (12) each registered double-digit kills for the Soaring Eagles. Curkendall also finished with 25 assists while Erin Bracken ’28 added 15 helpers of her own.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Elmira won the first set 25-23, the first time this season they have taken a set from their opponents. 

The second set, which went into extras, was won by SUNY Cobleskill, bringing the match to a tie at one set apiece. SUNY Cobleskill took the third set 25-19, pulling ahead 2-1 in the match.

The Soaring Eagles won the fourth set 25-17, evening the match at two sets each. After falling behind and on the verge of dropping its fifth match, EC showed a sense of urgency to come out of the set on top. 

The winner-take-all fifth set was won by Elmira College, 15-4 in dominating fashion. The Soaring Eagles got out to a 9-1 lead in the final set and never looked back.

All in all, EC totaled 57 kills, 49 assists, and 17 service aces en route to its first win of the season.

Elmira is back on the floor tomorrow morning with its first match against Smith College at 10:00 AM before another match at 2:00 PM with SUNY Potsdam.
