Soaring Eagles Down No. 13 NYU in Three Sets on Saturday Afternoon

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Elmira College men’s volleyball team took down 13th-ranked New York University in their first match inside Speidel Gymnasium in over a month. Edwin Sosa ’25 and Jordan Peiser ’24 notched double-digit kills, slamming 15 and 13, respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Soaring Eagles took the first set 25-19, coming back from being down 7-3 to start the match. Elmira scored six of the following eight points to tie the set at nine. After a point for NYU regave it the lead, the Purple & Gold scored three unanswered points and never relinquished the lead during the set. Sosa led the Soaring Eagles with six kills, while Peiser and Luke Jata ’27 notched three apiece.
  • EC was able to stave off a late surge by the Violets, taking the second set 26-24. The Soaring Eagles held a 23-20 lead late in the set, but three straight NYU points tied the game at 23. The two teams traded the following two points before Elmira closed out the set with two consecutive points, giving the Soaring Eagles a 2-0 lead. Sosa, Peiser, and Jata all notched a team-leading four kills during the second.
  • The Soaring Eagles held an 11-6 advantage to start the set. However, five consecutive NYU points tied the score. After both teams scored a point, the Soaring Eagles led the rest of the way, ending the set victorious and winning 25-19. Peiser led the squad with six kills in the third set, while Sosa followed with five.
