Soaring Eagles Drop Close Battle to #9 Nazareth on Wednesday Evening

ELMIRA, N.Y.  – The Elmira College men’s volleyball team jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the match, but were ultimately unable to hold on against UVC rival and #9 nationally-ranked Nazareth in its annual non-conference meeting. 

The teams, who exchanged leads 12 times and shared 43 tie games, would battle to the finish as five sets were needed to determine a winner, with two of the sets heading to extra points. The Golden Flyers, who were one service error shy of its season-high (16), were able to overcome its mistakes from the service line as Elmira served to a season-high 21 of its own while using a 7-0 run to conclude the fifth set.

Records: Elmira: (7-2, 1-0 UVC), Nazareth (14-2, 0-1 UVC)

Alberto Mauricio ’25 eclipsed 30 kills for the second consecutive match, while totalling 72 attacks in the match to lead Elmira. Edwin Sosa ’24 would tally 14 of his own, while Max Cohen ’25 compiled 52 set assists to lead the charge for the Soaring Eagles. 

Both teams hit nearly evenly in the match, with the Golden Flyers holding the slim .260% to .255% advantage in hitting percentage over the Soaring Eagles. 

Ryan Mattes ’23 would finish with a team-best .545 hitting percentage to go along with his six kills, while Mauricio and Alex Vega ’26 each tallied a dozen digs on the evening.
