Soaring Eagles Drop First UVC Match of the Season at MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Elmira College men’s volleyball dropped its match against MIT on Friday evening 3-0. Edwin Sosa ’25 led the Soaring Eagles with 11 kills for a hit percentage of .261.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Soaring Eagles dropped the first set of the match, 25-13. EC could only register six kills during the set, with Jordan Peiser ’24 tallying a team-leading four, while Sosa and Dylan Vargas ’27 each had one.
  • Elmira began the second set well, holding a 10-9 lead, then a 14-13 lead later. However, after both teams were tied at 15, the Engineers went on a six-point unanswered run and closed out the set on top 25-18. Sosa led the Purple & Gold in this set, registering five kills, while Luke Jata ’27 notched two more.
  • The third set also began strongly for Elmira, who took a 10-7 lead. However, after a Peiser kill gave the Soaring Eagles a 13-12 advantage later in the set, MIT would rattle off five unanswered points, taking a 17-13 lead over Elmira. From that point, EC struggled to get close to the hosts and ultimately fell 25-19 in the third and final set, dropping its opening match of UVC action 3-0.
  • Elmira recorded 27 kills during the match compared to 32 for MIT. However, the Soaring Eagles hit at just a .076 clip, while the Engineers posted a .288 hitting percentage. Additionally, EC only tallied one service ace and one block in the contest, while MIT had eight each.
