Soaring Eagles Drop Home Finale to Alfred on Wednesday Afternoon

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Elmira College women’s volleyball team dropped its home finale of the 2023 season against the visiting Saxons from Alfred University on Wednesday evening. The Soaring Eagles, who were able to take the second set 25-22 to knot the match at 1-1, then dropped the remaining two sets as the Saxons posted a .308 hitting percentage in the final set. 

For the match, the Soaring Eagles were led by Maddie Boucher ’24 with 11 kills, while Gabriella Rustine ’26 and Caroline Barr ’25 each posted six kills apiece. Defensively, Boucher led the way with 11 digs, while Gabriela Rodriguez ’26 chipped in nine. Asia Curkendall ’25 rounded out the Soaring Eagle leaders with 28 set assists and eight digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In the first, the Saxons would narrowly outedge the Soaring Eagles in kills, 8-7. Elmira would drop the opener 25-11 as Cassidy Ryan ’24 led the way with three kills, with Curkendall posting six assists. 
  • In the second, Elmira would rally back to knot the match at 1-1 after a 25-22 set victory. In the frame, EC would get ahead 9-4 in the early-going before the Saxons eventually took an 18-15 lead later on. From there, Elmira would use a pair of Alfred attacking errors to its advantage before rattling off four consecutive kills off the hands of Kayla Neer ’25, and three from Curkendall to retake the lead at 21-18.
