HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Elmira College Soaring Eagles fell in its Empire 8 road opener on Saturday afternoon, dropping its Saturday afternoon contest to the Highlanders from Houghton University, 3-1. After dropping the first set, the Purple & Gold stormed back to tie the match with a 25-21 second set victory, before the home team eventually took the final two sets of the match. Morgan Richardson ’25, Madi Conti ’28, and Morgan Sica ’28 each recorded double-digit kills, while Sica (4), Asia Curkendall ’25 (2), and Conti (2) rounded out the Elmira defense in the block category.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- With the Soaring Eagles ahead 19-16 in the first set, the Highlanders would close the frame on a 9-3 run to take the early lead
- From there, Elmira would see a .185 hitting percentage compared to a .074 clip for the Highlanders in the second set, in order to tie the match at 1-1. In the first three sets of the match, Elmira would record 12 kills per frame. With EC holding an 18-12 lead in the second, the Highlanders would eventually trim the deficit to 21-20, but four of the final five points from the Purple & Gold, capped by a service ace from Sica would allow EC to even the match.
- Elmira would fight in the third and fourth frames, but the Highlanders would see 25-23 and 25-27 set victories to take the match 3-1.
