Staats and Guedez Named Volleyball All-Americans; Reilly Regional Freshman of the Year


Cortland graduate student right-side hitter Zoe Staats (Buchanan/Hendrick Hudson) and sophomore middle blocker Alexa Guedez (Rye/Rye Neck) have been selected as 2022 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III women’s volleyball honorable mention All-Americans. In addition, middle blocker Emma Reilly (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) has been chosen as the AVCA Region 3 Freshman of the Year.

Staats, Guedez and Reilly were each named to the Region 3 all-region team – Staats and Guedez on the first team and Reilly as honorable mention. 

 

Cortland finished the season with a 22-6 record. The Red Dragons repeated as both the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) regular-season champion with a 9-0 record and the SUNYAC tournament champion. Cortland defeated Rowan in the NCAA first round before losing to Juniata in the second round to tie for 17th place nationally. 

 

Staats played in all 100 sets this season and led Cortland with 302 kills (3.0 per set). She posted a .319 attack percentage and 54 blocks. The SUNYAC Player of the Year, Staats registered double-figure kills 15 times, highlighted by 18 in a five-set win over Haverford and 17 each in five-set regular-season wins at Brockport and New Paltz. She also posted 16 kills in a four-set victory at Geneseo and 14 kills in the Red Dragons’ NCAA opening-round win over Rowan. 

 

Guedez played in 74 sets over 21 matches and has totaled 67 blocks (0.9 per set), 125 kills and a .256 attack percentage. She finished with nine blocks in a four-set win at Geneseo, seven blocks in a home win versus Western New England, and six blocks in a four-set loss to Springfield. She also posted three double-figure kill totals, led by 15 kills in a five-set win over Haverford and 12 in a five-set win at Brockport. 

 

Reilly played in 89 sets over 25 matches this season and led Cortland with 93 blocks (1.0 per set). She also had 116 kills and a .349 attack percentage. The SUNYAC Rookie of the Year, Reilly recorded a season-high eight blocks in Cortland’s five-set win over Haverford and seven blocks on three occasions, including the Red Dragons’ five-set win over Brockport in the SUNYAC finals.
