PITTSBURGH – Women’s volleyball’s Torrey Stafford and women’s soccer’s Landy Mertz have been named the PNC Achievers of the Week following a pair of sweeps from volleyball and the first ACC Championship Semifinal berth in women’s soccer’s program history.
Freshman Torrey Stafford helped the No. 6 Panthers to yet another set of sweeps this past weekend. She registered 22 kills (3.67 kills per set) and hit a .512 in their sweeps over Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. She recorded a team-high 11 kills on Friday night against the Hokies as she hit a .688 with six digs, two blocks and an ace. Stafford registered 11 more kills Sunday afternoon against Wake Forest while also adding four more digs and a block. She is currently second on the team in kills with 235, behind fellow freshman Olivia Babcock.
Women’s soccer’s Landy Mertz helped propel Pitt to their first ACC Championship Semifinal berth in program history with their overtime win against North Carolina on Sunday. Mertz recorded primary assists on both of the Panthers’ goals in their 2-1 overtime victory in the ACC Championship Quarterfinals this past weekend. Mertz had two beautiful crosses for an Ellie Coffield header in the 72nd minute and an Amanda West header at the end of the first period of overtime. The win over UNC was the first win against the Tar Heels in program history. The Panthers take on No. 1 Florida State this Thursday at 8 p.m. in Cary, NC.
