UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State’s Izzy Starck was named the Big Ten Women’s Volleyball Freshman of the Week on Monday. She earned the award for the fourth time this season after helping the third-ranked Nittany Lions post road wins over Michigan State and Indiana.
Starck averaged 12.14 assists and 2.71 digs per set for the week. She opened the road trip with 32 assists, seven digs, and two kills in a sweep over the Spartans. She followed that with a big statistical performance, totaling 53 assists, 12 digs, three blocks, and two kills in a four-set win over the Hoosiers. The double-double was her sixth of the season.
Starck is the first Penn State player since Deja McClendon in 2010 to earn four Big Ten Freshman of the Week awards.
Penn State has won at least one award from the Big Ten in six of seven weeks this season. Starck leads the way with four Freshman of the Week and one Setter of the Week honors. Jess Mruzik recently won back-to-back Player of the Week accolades.
Penn State is 16-1 overall and is tied with Nebraska atop the Big Ten standings at 6-0. The Nittany Lions travel to Columbus for a match with Ohio State on Friday at 8 p.m., and then return to Happy Valley to host No. 14 Minnesota on Sunday at 2 p.m.
