ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.– The Elizabethtown men’s volleyball team fell to No. 15 Rutgers-Newark, 3-0 in a Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) match, Friday evening.
Etown moves to 11-12 and 1-6 in the CVC while Rutgers-Newark improves to 12-5, 4-1 in the CVC.
Senior, Steve Swain moved to No. 1 in career-kills in Elizabethtown program history as he surpassed Nick Baxter with 730 total kills.
Set one saw Rutgers-Newark come out to a 6-2 lead followed by a kill, the Blue Jays then tied up the set, 6-6 after a block from Cheston Jacobs and Nick Chapman. The two teams then traded points before the Scarlet Raiders put up four straight points to take a 17-13 lead. A kill from Jacobs brought Etown back within five points. The Blue Jays went on a 6-1 run which included Raider errors and a kill from Tony Camillo. With the set tied, 22-22, Rutgers-Newark took the final three points to win, 25-22.
Rutgers-Newark started off set two strong before Elizabethtown came within one after tallying four points in a row. Kills from Swain and Blake Hildebrand tied up the set 8-8. The Raiders then went on a 6-3 run to take an 18-13 lead after two Etown errors. Through the end of the set the teams traded points but Rutgers-Newark ultimately came up victorious to win, 25-20.
Set three started the same as set one as Rutgers-Newark jumped to a 6-2 early lead. From there the Blue Jays picked it up, earning points from Scarlet Raider errors.
