Knoxville, Tenn.- The volleyball team was back on the road on Tuesday. The team traveled a short distance, compared to most road trips, to Knoxville to take on the Johnson University Lady Royals for an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) contest.
In the first set, kills by Marjorie Smith and Aly Grace Lemons helped the team tie the set at 4-4. Johnson scored four straight points to break the tie, moving ahead 9-5. TWU did not stay down for long, using an Ariana Smith kill, a Johnson error, a Cierra Williams service ace, and a block assist by Gabby Harris and A. Smith to tie the score 9-9. The home team went on to break the tie, and though the team kept the score close, the Lady Royals went on to take the first set 25-19.
The second set saw a different start than the first set. After a Jenna Huppert kill made the score 2-1 in favor of the opponents, Johnson outscored the Lady Bulldogs 10-3 to move ahead 12-4. Kills from A. Smith, Harris, and M. Smith helped the team move into double digits but the team did not gain traction on the scoreboard until a kill by Harris made the score 23-20 in Johnson’s favor. The opponents went on to take set point on the next point before kills by A. Smith and Haylie Peoples moved the score to 24-22. The opponents scored the next point needed to close the set, moving their lead to 2-0 with a 25-22 second set win.
After seeing the Lady Royals take a 10-6 lead in the third set, kills by Kali Bowie, Olivia Miller, and M. Smith helped the team come back to tie the score 11-11. Two different momentum swings occurred over the next few segments of the set. The first came from Johnson, who scored five straight points and seven of the next ten points to move ahead 17-13. The second swing came from the Lady Bulldogs scoring four of the next five points to make the score 18-17. A kill…
